Levi Benhiyoun To Recite Essay at Presidential Menorah Ceremony
"...What I also learn from Chanukah is that the Truth can never be overcome, no matter how many challenge it. Unlike the physical where 1000 pounds will definitely crush 1 pound, but not if it is a pound of truth. So too no impurities will defile the jug of oil which represents the Jewish soul, which is eternal..."
Sunday, Dec 13, 2009 Tonight, the third light of Chanukah, the National Chanukah Menorah was lit on the Ellipse, just across from the White House. This is an annual celebration organized by the American Friends of Lubavitch who formed the National Menorah Council in 2004 and enjoys support from 50 states. This year White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, who is Jewish, was the guest of honor at the event and lit the giant 28 foot tall Menorah (a replica of which stands in Daley Plaza in Chicago, Il.) Rabbi Meir Chai and Rivka Benhiyoun along with their son Levi Yitzchok, who won a national essay contest; “What Chanukah Means To Me”, were invited to the ceremony at which Levi Yitzchak recited the essay he had composed. Below is a copy of the essay. “What Chanukah Means To Me” What Chanukah means to me, is that the miracle of the oil does not only apply in the past but also in the present, which shows the eternity of the Jewish nation. Like it says in the prayer, “Bayamim Hahem Bizman Hazeh, (translation) Just like in those days in our days as well.” What I also learn from Chanukah is that the Truth can never be overcome, no matter how many challenge it. Unlike the physical where 1000 pounds will definitely crush 1 pound, but not if it is a pound of truth. So too no impurities will defile the jug of oil which represents the Jewish soul, which is eternal. Therefore, we stay strong and faithful to our observance of Torah and Mitzvos and our Jewish identity will not be weakened despite the many hardships and distractions. This has proven itself throughout history and it is true today more than ever before. The values of the Jewish people and the Torah have become the bedrock of modern civilization and have influenced the forming of the foundations of many nations today. Thus, we represent not just the light of Chanukah but indeed, we are a light to the nations of our time. HAPPY CHANUKAH! to view live click here
